The Royal College of Emergency Medicine in Scotland has called for an urgent increase in bed numbers, after latest data showing more than 4,000 patients faced 12-hour delays in Scottish accident and emergency (A&E) departments. A&E performance figures for September 2023, show there were 113,864 attendances at major A&Es in Scotland – 50% of patients were seen within four hours and 38,114 (33.5%) waited more than four hours, an increase of 145.5% compared with September 2019, with 11,788 (10.4%) of patients waiting eight hours or more.
