The Care Quality Commission has released its latest annual assessment of health and adult social care in England. The state of health care and adult social care in England 2022/23 points to a turbulent year, with the cost-of-living crisis and workforce pressures escalating. This risks leading to unfair care, it says, where those who can afford to pay for treatment do, while those who can’t face longer waits and reduced access. Adult social care providers also face increased running costs, with some struggling to pay staff in line with inflation. The situation is likely to exacerbate heath inequalities and increase the risk of a two-tier system of healthcare – CQC’s adult inpatient survey, based on feedback from more than 63,000 people, found that 41% felt their health deteriorated while they were on a waiting list to be admitted to hospital.
