HFMA UK president Paul Assinder addressed the US HFMA Annual National Institute in Las Vegas in June. The conference, which had faced a late venue change following flooding in Nashville, is the American equivalent of the UK association’s annual conference – but on a bigger scale. Total attendance reaches around 4,500 with a massive 400 exhibitors. Despite the different approaches to funding health, the UK and US systems face common challenges of cutting costs and improving quality. In the US, ‘accountable care organisations’ are seen as the way to manage care across whole pathways.
