Two foundation trust finance directors – Jenny Ehrhardt from Manchester University and Richard Mills from Sherwood Forest Hospitals – will line up alongside Stephen Sutcliffe of NHS Shared Business Services to contest the Finance Director of the Year Award.hfma awards 2021 L

Foundation trusts also dominate the Deputy Finance Director category, with Helen Taylor (County Durham and Darlington), Andrew Chilton (Bolton) and Kay Wiss (Stockport) all making the shortlist.

In England, the last year saw clinical commissioning groups disbanded and new integrated care boards (ICBs) created in July. So, it is not surprising to see provider organisations making up much of the shortlist. However, new ICBs and integrated care systems will be competing in a number of awards. For example, two ICBs – Mid and South Essex and Lincolnshire – have been shortlisted for this year’s Governance Award. United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust and assurance services provider MIAA are the other shortlisted bodies.

There are two new awards this year. The shortlist for the inaugural Environmental Sustainability Award includes: Newcastle-upon-Tyne Hospital NHS Foundation Trust; Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust; and the East of England productivity and efficiency group in a joint entry with PrescQIPP Community Interest Company.

Meanwhile there are four organisations on the new Addressing Health Inequalities through NHS Finance Action Award shortlist. These include: Cardiff and Vale University Health Board; Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust; Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust; and the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee.

A number of organisations have hopes in multiple categories. The Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust makes both the Finance Team of the Year Award and the Havelock Award, presented for contributions to finance training and development.

Barts Health NHS Trust and Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are among the contenders for both the Diversity and Inclusion Award and the Costing Award. The Warrington trust’s Anne Robinson is also one of three clinicians with a chance of winning the Working with Finance – Clinician of the Year Award.

Another clinician on the list – Adam Carney – means that Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust has three chances of success. The trust has also been shortlisted for the Costing Award and the Delivering Value with Digital Technologies Award.

The final winners will be announced in December at an awards ceremony held during the HFMA annual conference. Full details of all shortlisted organisations and individuals can be found online.
