Event: webinar –23 February 2024
Hardev Virdee, group chief finance officer, Barts Health NHS Trust

The HFMA Finance Director of Year Award 2023 winner Hardev Virdee discussed why he believed he was nominated for, and won, the award. As part of this, he talked about his background touching on a fear of failure as well as feeling the need to change himself in order to achieve. Mr Virdee insisted he did not win the award because of his technical skills as a finance director, but because of his focus on creating good teams. This, he believed, enabled him to succeed at Barts Health NHS Trust and drive forward his passion of creating a more diverse healthcare finance profession.

This was achieved by fostering a collaborative and transparent system approach to recovery. Reflecting on the work, Ms Briggs identified six keys to success, the primary one of which was building unified leadership as part of a unified system.

‘The most enlightening point from this webinar is the chief executive officers and chief finance officers within an ICS stand with each other and work together. It shows how much can be achieved through collaboration instead of competition.’
