A shadowing programme has been launched to give NHS finance managers an insight into commercial sector finance.
The programme, run by the HFMA and accountancy body ACCA, is being targeted at deputy finance directors and other senior finance managers in the health service to enable them to shadow a senior finance professional in the commercial sector.

The programme is a result of the HFMA’s World Class Finance initiative, championed by former chairman Bill Shields, in which the association surveyed deputy finance directors about their career aspirations and needs. Deputies identified obstacles to moving around the NHS but the World Class Finance group was also keen to learn from the private sector.

‘There is a lot we can learn from the private sector in their approach to financial management and productivity and vice versa,’ said Alison Myles, HFMA director of learning and development. ‘There is also benefit in understanding the challenges facing different finance practitioners in different sectors.’

The HFMA and ACCA will pair partners based on information from applicants. Applications are requested by 16 April.

A report setting out a work programme based on the findings of World Class Finance will be published soon.
