Tammie Jackson lSpeaking at the HFMA annual conference in London today, Ms Jackson (pictured) said the Covid pandemic felt like a pivotal moment in history. And, just as World War II had led to greater access to the workplace for women, and the assassination of JFK had paved the way for civil liberties legislation in the US, Covid should lead to similar seismic changes.

This change should be equal access to healthcare.

‘For us in the US HFMA, this means designing our revenue cycles so there is more equity across all socio-demographic groups, building a digital strategy that is accessible to all, or developing telehealth services that are inclusive, regardless of socio-demographic status.

‘Equal access to healthcare is a just and worthy cause.’

Even if finance managers are not involved directly in developing a service, they can influence equity.

‘We can be better than before. We must,’ she said. ‘I hope that resonates professionally. This is our mission.’

Referring to the expansion of the HFMA UK membership, with the association offering free membership to those in bands 2-6, she asked delegates to think about who they will encourage to join. Would this be people from their own social circle, or would they look to a wider group?

‘You have to widen the lens to people who don't look like you, who have different skills and backgrounds. I encourage you to be bold, and I am convinced we are up to the task.’
