News / Burnham unveils PCT freedoms
Top performing PCTs will be given more flexibility and greater control over how they operate from 2010/11, new health secretary Andy Burnham (pictured above) told the NHS Confederation conference in June.
This freedom will include the ability to set longer term plans and be subject to lighter touch performance management.
Mr Burnham addressed the conference less than a week after being appointed as a replacement for Alan Johnson, who moved to the role of home secretary during the recent Cabinet reshuffle.
Mr Burnham was formerly culture secretary but he has had a stint at the Department of Health before – as a junior minister in 2006.
