HFMA e-learning users have delivered a major vote of confidence in the association’s online training system.

The association launched its e-learning system in 2006 and now has 15 modules delivering training on a range of finance issues, from budgeting and primary care finance to payment by results and governance across two series.

Users can also work towards an Introductory certificate in healthcare finance by undertaking five modules from the introductory series or select a module from the Finance in practice series, which offers a more in-depth technical understanding of specific subjects.

A survey of users, finance directors and development leads has revealed growing support for this more flexible approach to delivering training and raising financial awareness. Nine out of 10 users said the online training package had helped them achieve personal learning goals. A similar number (86%) reported that the content took a practical approach reflecting real NHS finance issues that staff face day to day.

Some 80% of users said the content was directly relevant to their current role, while the remainder saw the learning more as preparation for future roles.

With an estimated 25% of all non-finance staff in the NHS having financial management as a core competency in their role (G4 in knowledge and skills framework dimensions), the HFMA believes e-learning provides a cost-effective way to deliver training and raise financial awareness.

‘We already have modules covering the key areas of NHS finance, which we refresh on a regular basis, and we are looking to expand the scope of the modules where appropriate,’ said HFMA chief executive Mark Knight.

The content is relevant to a wide range of finance and non-finance staff including healthcare professionals, clinicians, service managers, budget holders and non-executive directors.
